RABAT, MOROCCO — Defending champions Nigeria's Super Falcons endured one of the biggest shocks in the history of the Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after suffering a dramatic 3-2 defeat to tournament debutants Malawi in their opening Group C fixture on Tuesday night.

The thrilling encounter at Al Madina Stadium, Rabat, saw Malawi announce themselves on the continental stage in spectacular fashion, handing the record African champions an unexpected defeat in a match filled with late drama.

The result marks one of the greatest upsets in WAFCON history and the first time Nigeria has lost to a tournament debutant since the competition was established.

Malawi Strike Through the Chawinga Sisters

Despite dominating possession for much of the opening half, Nigeria failed to convert their superiority into goals.

Malawi punished the Super Falcons after the break through their deadly attacking duo, Temwa Chawinga and Tabitha Chawinga.

Temwa broke the deadlock midway through the second half before Tabitha doubled Malawi's advantage minutes later following another swift attacking move.

Nigeria mounted a spirited late comeback when captain Rasheedat Ajibade calmly converted a penalty in stoppage time to reduce the deficit.

However, Temwa Chawinga restored Malawi's two-goal cushion moments later with another clinical finish, effectively sealing a famous victory for the debutants.

Substitute Uchenna Kanu scored deep into added time to make it 3-2, but Nigeria ran out of time to rescue a point.

Qualification Race Becomes More Difficult

Earlier in the day, Zambia produced an emphatic 6-0 victory over Egypt, leaving the Group C standings wide open.

The defeat means Nigeria now faces enormous pressure heading into their next fixture against the Copper Queens. Anything short of victory could seriously threaten the Super Falcons' hopes of progressing comfortably to the knockout stages.

With the 2026 WAFCON also serving as a qualification pathway to the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup in Brazil, every point has become increasingly valuable.

Head coach Justine Madugu will be expected to address defensive lapses that proved costly against the energetic Malawian side.
