Katsina, May 31, 2026 — Fresh concerns over Nigeria’s security situation have emerged following the reported abduction of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, a former Director of Defence Information, and his wife by suspected bandits in Katsina State.
According to multiple reports, the retired senior military officer and his wife were travelling through the Matazu axis of Katsina State when heavily armed gunmen intercepted their vehicle and whisked them away to an unknown destination.
Sources said the attackers opened fire on the vehicle during the ambush. The couple’s driver reportedly survived despite sustaining gunshot injuries and was later taken for medical treatment.
Major General Abubakar served as Director of Defence Information between 2015 and 2017 and was one of the most recognizable public voices of Nigeria’s Armed Forces during critical periods of military operations against insurgency and insecurity.
