The Nigeria Police Force in Imo State has confirmed the arrest of two suspects in connection with the alleged rape and murder of a 21-year-old nursing student, Wendy Achumba, whose death has triggered outrage in Obowo Local Government Area.
The suspects, identified as Onyema Okonkwo and Emmanuel Onyekachi, were arrested following what police described as intelligence-led investigations conducted by operatives of the Obowo Divisional Police Headquarters in collaboration with community stakeholders.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, Henry Okoye, one of the suspects confessed to raping and killing the victim in an attempt to conceal the crime, while also implicating the second suspect as an accomplice.
He further disclosed that the suspects have been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for discreet investigation and eventual prosecution.
Community Reaction and Traditional Response
The incident has sparked shock and anger in Umuadara Umulogho, where residents, youth leaders, and traditional authorities have publicly condemned the killing.
The traditional ruler of the community, Eze Patrick Uwalaka, alongside community leaders, distanced the town from the crime and insisted that the area remains peaceful and safe for residents.
Community youths also expressed support for the arrest, praising security operatives for their swift response and calling for expedited prosecution to ensure justice for the deceased student.

The Commissioner of Police in Imo State assured residents that the case is being handled with seriousness and professionalism, adding that anyone found culpable will face the full weight of the law.
Authorities have urged members of the public to remain calm while investigations continue, even as tensions remain high in the affected community.
The tragic case has once again raised concerns over student safety in off-campus accommodations and broader security challenges in parts of Imo State.
