ADC Begins Search for Tinubu’s Challenger as Atiku, Amaechi, Hayatu-Deen Battle for 2027 Presidential Ticket

ABUJA, NIGERIA —

The African Democratic Congress is set to begin the process of selecting its presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections today, as party members across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory participate in the crucial exercise.

The primary election is expected to determine who will emerge as the party’s standard bearer to challenge incumbent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in what is already shaping into a highly competitive political contest ahead of 2027.

Party insiders disclosed that the ADC eventually settled for the direct primary method after the three leading aspirants — Atiku Abubakar, Rotimi Amaechi, and Mohammed Hayatu-Deen — reportedly rejected calls to step down for a consensus arrangement.

Although the party had earlier considered an affirmation-style process similar to that adopted by the Nigeria Democratic Congress, party officials insisted the direct primary remains fully compliant with provisions of the Electoral Act 2026.

Atiku Seen as Frontrunner

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar enters the contest with extensive political experience, nationwide structures, and deep-rooted influence across opposition circles.

Since leaving the Peoples Democratic Party in November 2025, Atiku has emerged as one of the leading forces behind efforts to unite opposition figures under the ADC platform.

Working alongside key political figures including former Senate President David Mark and former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola, Atiku has championed coalition-building efforts aimed at mounting a formidable challenge against the ruling party in 2027.

Analysts believe his national recognition, political machinery, and financial strength could give him a significant advantage over other aspirants.

However, critics within and outside the party argue that Nigeria may require younger leadership voices after decades of Atiku’s active political involvement.

Amaechi Pushes Southern Presidency Argument

Former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi is also regarded as a major contender in the race.

Amaechi, who served as Minister of Transportation under former President Muhammadu Buhari, is campaigning on his governance record, infrastructure projects, and leadership experience.

Supporters point to the railway projects executed during his tenure and educational infrastructure developed during his time as Governor of Rivers State as evidence of administrative competence.

Political allies of the former minister are also making a strong case for the presidency to remain in Southern Nigeria after President Tinubu’s first term, arguing that regional balance and zoning considerations should influence the party’s decision.

Despite his credentials, observers say Amaechi still faces the challenge of matching Atiku’s nationwide political network within the ADC structure.

Hayatu-Deen Represents Technocratic Alternative

Former banker Mohammed Hayatu-Deen remains the third aspirant in the race, positioning himself as a technocratic alternative focused on economic reforms, governance efficiency, and institutional rebuilding.

Though viewed as less politically entrenched compared to Atiku and Amaechi, Hayatu-Deen is attracting attention among party members seeking a fresh face outside Nigeria’s traditional political establishment.

Political Stakes Rising Ahead of 2027

Today’s primary marks a major milestone in Nigeria’s evolving opposition politics as parties begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

With economic concerns, insecurity, unemployment, and governance issues dominating national conversations, political observers believe the emergence of a strong ADC candidate could significantly reshape the country’s political landscape in the months ahead.

Attention now turns to whether the opposition coalition can remain united after the primaries or whether internal divisions could weaken its challenge against the ruling government.
