Tinubu Appoints 39-Year-Old Professor Segun Aina as New JAMB Registrar

ABUJA, NIGERIA —

In a move widely seen as a bold generational shift within Nigeria’s education sector, Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Professor Segun Aina as the new Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

Professor Aina, who turns 40 in July, succeeds Professor Is-haq Oloyede, whose highly regarded two-term tenure officially concludes on July 31, 2026.

The appointment introduces a youthful, technology-driven academic administrator into one of Nigeria’s most strategically important educational institutions at a time when digital transformation and examination integrity remain central national priorities.

A Technocrat with Global Academic Credentials

Professor Segun Aina currently serves as Professor of Computer Engineering at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife.

He holds a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Computer Systems Engineering from University of Kent and earned both an MSc in Internet Computing and Network Security and a PhD in Digital Signal Processing from Loughborough University, United Kingdom.

He also completed the Senior Management Programme at Lagos Business School, further strengthening his leadership and administrative expertise.

With more than 15 years of post-graduation professional experience, Aina has built a reputation as a systems expert operating at the intersection of technology, institutional reform, governance, and public-sector innovation.

Interestingly, his connection with JAMB dates back to his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) year, where he gained firsthand exposure to national admissions systems and data-driven examination processes — experiences believed to have significantly influenced his later contributions to examination reforms and institutional optimization.

A New Era for JAMB?

Analysts believe the appointment signals the Tinubu administration’s intention to deepen digital innovation, operational efficiency, transparency, and modernization across Nigeria’s educational institutions.

Professor Aina’s expertise in digital infrastructure, systems design, cybersecurity, and institutional transformation positions him as a potentially transformative figure capable of consolidating and expanding the reforms initiated under Oloyede’s administration.

As Nigeria continues to advance toward technology-driven governance and smarter public institutions, stakeholders within the education sector are expected to closely monitor how the new registrar navigates the evolving challenges of admissions management, examination credibility, digital security, and equitable access to tertiary education.

For many observers, the appointment represents more than a leadership transition — it reflects a broader national conversation about youth inclusion, innovation, and the future of institutional leadership in Nigeria.

congratulates Professor Segun Aina on his appointment and wishes him success as he assumes leadership of Nigeria’s foremost admissions body.
